Planting Tulips – Soldiers From The Sky

Aslackby, Laughton and Graby Parish Council have been invited to play a part in the Soldiers From The Sky airborne forces visitor trail. This will honour airborne forces from Britain, Poland and America who were stationed around our area.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded a grant to South Kesteven District Council to draw together the story that our part of Lincolnshire played, especially during 1944-45.

Our participation is to plant 80 tulip bulbs which will flower in the colour of the berets worn by the British Paratroop Regiment next Spring. Already in the Netherlands, children in Arnhem remember the sacrifice made by so many troops in 1944, during Operation Market Garden, as they bring flowers to the war cemetery every year.

Now we have a chance to grow tulips to link us to them in our own way. As we honour the men who flew from here, we will doubtless be giving our heartfelt prayers for our own peaceable future.

The Parish Council would like the children of the parish to join us on Saturday morning 30th November at 10.30 to plant 40 bulbs in the graveyard (on the spur road next to SL engineering) and 40 more on the roadside verge, to signify that Aslackby village forms part of the airborne services trail.

Please ensure each child is accompanied by an adult. As we are proposing to plant not far from the main road, high vis will be provided; this planting area is restricted to children over the age of 11.
